International Joint Certificate Program "Selected Topics in Computational Mathematics"

Offered by

Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine

and
Julius Maximilian University Würzburg, Germany

Internationalization is an essential element of modern science and economy. Julius Maximilian University Würzburg and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv offer to highly qualified master students in

  • Applied Mathematics and Informatics,
  • Computer Science and Electronics, and
  • Mechanics and Mathematics

a new and fascinating opportunity: an international Joint Certificate Program (JCP) in Selected Topics in Computational Mathematics focusing on Mathematical Fundamenta of Computer Sciences/Informatics. The language of instruction of the program is English. The JCP is completed by a certificate issued jointly by both universities. Successful participants will acquire important skills for a further career in academia or industry, nationally or internationally.

Courses completed successfully within the JCP can be included simultaneously in regular master courses at Ivan Franko National University as electives.

Upon successful completion of the JCP, Julius Maximilian University Würzburg will support excellent students in obtaining

  • a PhD scholarship at the University of Würzburg or
  • an internship in companies from the Würzburg area that support the program (such as Brose or Wittenstein).

Students who want to go to Würzburg for a PhD scholarship or an internship need to speak some German. For students who don’t speak German or who want to improve their German, German language courses and language tests are offered in the framework of this program.

The best 30 applicants will be selected. The selection will be based on the bachelor grade (and possibly a short test about the applicant's background in computation).

The program includes seven modules (corresponding to 5 ECTS credit points each).

In the Fall Semester (October 1 – December 31, 2015):

  • Computational Geometry, a semestral course taught by Prof. Taras Banakh (Lviv University, Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics);
  • Algorithmic Graph Theory, an intensive block course taught by Prof. Alexander Wolff (University of Würzburg) in the week Nov. 2–6;
  • Algorithms and Data Structures in Python, a semestral course taught by Dr. Bohdan Hoshko (Lviv University, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics);
  • German language, a course delivered by teachers of the Chair of Foreign Languages of Lviv University.

In the Spring Semester (February 15 – May 30, 2016):

  • Computational Linguistics, a semestral course taught by Prof. Oleh Kushnir (Lviv University, Faculty of Electronics), Dr. Yuriy Ishchuk (Lviv Universitty, Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty);
  • Compexity Theory, an intensive block course taught by Prof. Klaus Wagner (University of Würzburg) in the two weeks May 9–13 and May 16–20;
  • 3D Point Cloud Processing, an intensive block course taught by Prof. Dorit Borrmann   (University of Würzburg) in Feb 29 – Mar 7;
  • German language II, a course delivered by teachers of the Chair of Foreign Languages of Lviv University.

All the courses are taught at Lviv University. Each course ends with an exam.

A brief application with the following information

  1. name,
  2. current study program,
  3. bachelor grade (1–5),
  4. grade of English and/or German test in the master entrance exam (1–30)

must be submitted by email to yu.ishchuk аt gmail.com.

This is the second year of the JCP between the two universities. In the academic year 2014/15, four students obtained the joint certificate. While they were writing their master theses, three of the four students spent one month (May 2015) at the University of Würzburg under the supervision of professors from Mathematics and Computer Science. One of the four students received a DAAD scholarship for doing his PhD reserach at the University of Würzburg.
